Nova skyland hotel HAS BIOSPHERE SUSTAINABLE CERTIFICATE and Sustainable Travel Finland Badge
At Nova Skyland Hotel, the overall wellbeing of Lapland and the Earth is important to us. We recognize that traveling and tourism do have an effect on both the environment and the local community, and that is why we are determined to develop sustainable tourism in Lapland.
We have a vast recycling system at the hotel property
We recycle furniture and equipment (buy second-hand and sell old ones) as much as possible
Energy & Water
Our hotel runs with 100% certified fossile-free energy (nuclear power) and the 100% of the heating is from renewable, carbon neutral, sources (wood materials)
We pursue to limit water consumption for example with encouraging guests not to change their towels daily
Equality
Whether it's the staff or our guests equality matters to us. We welcome all genders and people from any origin to work or stay at our hotel with an open heart.
We have clear procedures in place for addressing harassment and safety concerns. Our general company policies include clear guidelines against harassment and exploitation.
When recruiting personnel, the company makes the choices to hire a person only by their work related experience and fitting skill sets to the certain job.
We stay up to date with Finnish laws and regulations through regular updates from trade associations, local authorities, and service providers. Compliance is monitored by management and integrated into staff training and internal audits. (Finnish Labor law 55/2001).
Animal Welfare
We treat our hotel reindeer as a part of the Nova Skyland Hotel family, and offer/recommend our guests only responsible and ethical animal activities.
We follow Finnish animal welfare law (693/2023) and ABTA’s Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism based on the principles of the Five Freedoms: good feeding, good housing, good health, appropriate behaviour and protection from fear and distress.
In the restaurant, we will use only meat, fish and seafood that are certified and/or species that are knowingly 100% not endangered or protected. When planning menus, the chef will check CITES Checklist of Species and WWF’s Guide for Fish Species to ensure safe usage of certain ingredients.
Green Areas
Our hotel has been built so that we preserve the nature around the property as much as possible.
In order to help biodiversity, we try to preserve the nature around the buildings as untouched as possible, put up bird houses and insect hotels in the trees that are on the premises and restore the nature areas back to the original growth (for example growing moss) if digging or other ground work has been done.
Indoor Environment
The hotel and the rooms have been designed and built with natural materials and Finnish quality
Social Responsibility
We collaborate with local schools and educational institutions by offering internships and trainings, and other tourism businesses on the area when developing services and sustainability in Rovaniemi, and sponsor local communities related to children and sports.
Visit finland's sustainable finland pledge for travelers

We take sustainability into account in everything we do – and we'd like to invite you on this journey with us. The Sustainable Finland Pledge is a part of this commitment."
With these tips you can make your travels more sustainable and responsible.
TRAVELING
Use public transportation as much as possible.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
Favour local food and drink tap water instead of buying bottled water.
ENVIRONMENT
Respect the nature and the locals, and recycle.
ANIMAL WELFARE
Treat the animals and wild life with respect. Choose responsible and ethical animal activities.
Traveling
Rovaniemi can easily be reached by train or even by bus from Helsinki, so you don't need to fly all the way.
Use public transportation when transfering between our hotel and the city center.
If you plan your travels well, you can reach most places in Lapland with a bus instead of a rental car.
Food & Beverage
Lappish tap water is one of the cleanest in the world. Please drink that and bring your own reusable bottle with you instead of buying bottled water.
When dining from a buffet, breakfast or other, please take only as much as you will eat. You can always take more but it's not good for the environment to waste food.
Environment & Community
The Lappish nature is very delicate so please respect it in order to keep it as pure and wonderful as it is. Don't leave trash behind but always bring them with you to a place where you can put it in the trash bin.
Even though Rovaniemi is a popular tourist destination, it is also a home for 65 000 locals who live here. Please respect the locals, their everyday life and privacy. Learn local traffic rules that where you can walk and drive, and don't go to private backyards or properties.
In Finland, we have a highly developed recycling system and you will see recycling stations, that you are more than welcome to use, in many places.
Animal Welfare
Whether it was the hotel reindeer at Nova Skyland, reindeer at a farm or in a safari or reindeer in the wild, please treat them with respect. They are sensitive, living creatures with feelings.
When you choose your activities with Arctic animals, do research that the animals are treated with the best possible way. At Nova, we take this matter very seriously, so in order to offer our guests responsible husky tours, we and Nova Galaxy Village that is operating the tours, have partnered up with professional sled dog musher Jussi Holck and his wife, Inka. The huskies are their family and the wellbeing and happiness of the dogs is the number one priority for Jussi and Inka. We are also more than happy to help you with finding the most responsible and ethical choices.
There are a lot ot wild life in Lapland even in the urban areas. Please don't disturb them and leave them enjoy their peace. You can take pictures of course, but please don't go too close.
